 Natural colouring gives the colour orange yellow and is allowed to be used in any type of food (meat products, milk, eggs, vegetables, fruits, cereals, sweets, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, etc.) except those for infants and young children, according to the quantities provided for in the recipes.  This dye is hardly soluble in water, and the color obtained varies from yellow to orange/red, depending on the pH of the food in which it is added.

Curcumin and turmeric are natural dyes, obtained from the roots and stems of turmeric longa and Turmeric domestica plants. Curcumin is found naturally in turmeric, it is the component that offers the distinctive orange color of the spice.  On the other hand, turmeric is the root of a plant whose scientific name is Turmeric Longa and probably from here curcumin takes its name. 

The problem is that turmeric powder contains only about 3% curcumin, which is the powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.
